In a remote job, “async” means you can make progress without everyone replying or meeting at the same time. You might leave a clear note, share a file or ask a question, then keep working while a colleague responds later.
It does not mean you can set any hours you want, that the job has no meetings, or that you can work from any country. Those are separate details to check in the job listing.
Async and live communication
A live call or chat needs people to be available at once. An async message can wait until the other person is working. Many remote workplaces use both.
GitLab describes async communication as moving work forward without requiring others to be available when a message is sent. Its handbook also explains that some discussions still work better in real time. That is one company’s approach, not a rule every employer follows. Read GitLab’s communication guide.
| If the job says… | Find out… |
|---|---|
| “Async-first” | Which tasks can wait, and which need a quick reply? |
| “Flexible hours” | Are there core hours or a set shift? |
| “Few meetings” | How often do meetings happen, and when? |
| “Global team” | Is there a required time-zone overlap? |
Questions to ask before you accept
The job description may not spell out how the day works. Ask direct questions during the hiring process:
- What hours must I be available, if any?
- How quickly should I reply to routine messages?
- How does the team handle urgent issues?
- How many recurring meetings are there, and what time are they held?
- Where do people record decisions after a call?
These answers tell you more than the word “async” alone. If the role says “work independently,” ask how your manager sets priorities and gives feedback.
Async does not answer where you can work
A company can use async communication and still limit hiring to certain countries. It can also ask workers to keep set hours. Check the location and schedule as separate parts of the offer. Our guide to country eligibility and work hours covers those questions.
When you browse remote jobs on Remoteli, use the working-hours filter as a starting point, then read the employer’s listing for the full schedule. A label can help you find a role; the employer’s details tell you what the workday requires.
The short answer
Async means work does not always depend on an immediate reply. It can make it easier to work across time zones, but it does not promise a flexible schedule or a meeting-free job. Ask about response times, core hours and meetings before deciding whether the setup fits you.
