Union.ai is a Seattle-based startup founded by a team of former Lyft engineers.  We contribute to Flyte,  an open source platform for orchestrating massively scalable machine learning pipelines running on Kubernetes. 

These pipelines power some of the most popular apps on your phone, as well as applications in diverse industries such as song sharing, vaccine research, early cancer detection, global map rendering, financial projecting, and piloting autonomous vehicles.

The Opportunity:

You will lead a current team of two Dev Rel professionals currently located across India and Columbia. As the VP of our Developer Relations team at Union, you will be pivotal in building, fostering and expanding the community of software engineers utilizing and contributing to Flyte. Your core objective will be to articulate the value of our platform to developers, generate user adoption, and champion our users’ needs within our organization. Our ideal candidate will be located within the United States or Canada, to best align with the timezones of our community members and will have prior engineering experience that will allow them to build deep trust with their audience.

In this role, you will:

• Strategize and execute developer outreach initiatives, including content creation, webinars, and community events

• Collaborate closely with our engineering and marketing teams to effectively communicate Flyte’s features and benefits to the developer community

• Build and manage a motivated team of open-source community managers and developer evangelists

• Establish and enhance feedback mechanisms to ensure seamless communication between users and our engineering team

• Represent our users’ perspective internally and advocating for their needs to inform product development

• Engage directly with developers, offering technical guidance and helping them unlock the full potential of Flyte

• Develop meaningful relationships with our internal engineering team members and generate feedback loops on our product where appropriate 

• Meet our communities where they are, we expect roughly 30% travel in this role

About you: 

• You are an experienced engineer with a deep understanding of open source ecosystems and have extensive demonstrated success in growing developer communities

• You have spent at least 5 years as a technical lead or Software Engineer and 5+ years leading high performing teams as a hands-on, technical manager

• You’re comfortable functioning as an Individual Contributor(IC) and possess the capacity to recruit, nurture, and lead a technical team

• You are most fulfilled when directly interacting with engineers, and assisting them to resolve complex problems using novel technology solutions

• You have a theoretical understanding and practical experience with distributed systems at scale and familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), Containers (Kubernetes), and CI/CD systems

• Experience Kubernetes ecosystem is strongly preferred 

• This isn’t your first startup. You understand how to build within ambiguity and have prior experience reporting into a technical founding team 

• Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts into easily understandable language

• Proven track record of growing vibrant and inclusive open source communities

• An inherent understanding of engineers and the challenges they face

• Strong capacity to align your efforts with the overall company vision and goals

• Flexibility and willingness to work as part of a hybrid team, crossing international time zones
