UX Researcher

Product Design at Gusto is made up of over 60 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We’re a cross-functional bunch focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops and Front-end Development who are always looking for opportunities to build understanding and empathy for the people who use Gusto. We don’t care a whole lot about swim lanes and we work closely with our partners in Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build and ship experiences that make a difference. We are passionate advocates for thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences and we believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful.

We’re looking for a UX Researcher to drive our user research efforts, alongside other researchers within our team. You'll build a regular cadence of rapid, high-impact studies in a fast-paced environment. The right person will be comfortable focusing primarily on tactical research to improve all elements of our customer’s experience, but also be able to do deeper strategic needs-finding research from time to time. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Work closely with designers, product managers, engineers, and customer support to identify research topics.
  • Prioritize many research needs based on company goals and estimated impact.
  • Conduct both tactical usability research and strategic needs-finding research.
  • Use research methods and processes that match a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Communicate and promote research results in ways that influence teams and impact product decisions.
  • Create experiences, documents, and presentations that help teams learn about customer needs.
  • Coordinate and improve every team's efforts for gathering customer feedback.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Have knowledge of user experience research methods and their application within startup environments.
  • Be flexible, detail-oriented, and have an entrepreneurial ownership mentality.
  • Have an excellent ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Be a champion of not only user research but also great product design.
  • Have a genuine empathy for small business owners and employees and a deep desire to improve their lives.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and analytical skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 3-5 years of experience conducting user research for small or large companies.
  • 1+ years of experience working within a research team.
  • BA/BS in psychology, anthropology, sociology, cognitive science or related field.
  • Practical experience with a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods, techniques, and testing tools.
  • Proven ability to make smart decisions about how and when to apply research methods based on a solid understanding of their benefits and tradeoffs.
