Supervising Editor Code Switch Temporary

Code Switch, the nation’s signature podcast and reporting team on race and identity, seeks a creative, passionate, detail-driven supervising editor who will shape those stories and bring those voices to our rapidly growing podcast and radio audience. We’re re-imagining our future — exploring how we can go to new places and tell new stories while preserving the distinctive voice that has made Code Switch a “must-listen” for so many people. And we’re committed to staying grounded in the highest levels of journalism.

The Supervising Editor will serve as a key leader on the team, helping set the editorial agenda and format of the show in collaboration with Executive Producer and other stakeholders. They will empower, motivate, and encourage the production staff to create a best in class podcast and to achieve their editorial and professional goals, creatively removing obstacles along the way.

As a Supervising Editor, you must have strong editorial judgment and will define areas of coverage, sharpen ideas, push past surface takes, seek opportunities to expand the show’s audio footprint, and be equally focused on the big picture and the minutiae. This person will manage a collaborative and tight knit team - offering constructive, rigorous, fair feedback with empathy and kindness while helping them grow. 

This is a remote position that reports to our Executive Producer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set the editorial agenda in collaboration with the Senior Editor and Senior Producer, with guidance from the Executive Producer and input from hosts and producers, then motivate and empower staff to achieve goals.
  • Lead by example, embodying the team values of support, collaboration, empathy, inclusivity, diversity, and equity. 
  • Bring actionable ideas, from story conception to workflow.
  • Lead editorial meetings, manage staff assignments and future planning.
  • Work closely with hosts, Executive Producer, and editorial stakeholders to sustain the creative direction of the show and carry out a sustainable format.
  • Edit episodes on the macro and micro level: on framing as well as fine tuning copy and fact checking.
  • Edit the weekly Code Switch newsletter and Instagram copy to promote episodes. 
  • Edit and copy edit digital copy.
  • Lead by example by executing and helping the team execute episode production according to established workflow.
  • Coordinate cross promotion with other teams and shows.
  • Be ambitious, thinking up large-scale projects for the team to tackle and working with other divisions to bring those projects to life.
  • Bring seriousness of purpose, rigor and decisiveness, balanced with a sense of humor and a spirit of flexibility.
  • Provide direct, critical feedback to staff on pitches and performance with kindness and consideration.
  • Ensure every episode meets our high standards for craft, journalism, and tone and substance.  
  • Supervise at least 3 direct reports.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

WORK LOCATION

  • Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Experience in leading and motivating a team, aiding in the professional development of junior staff, maintaining high morale, infusing the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and creativity into every aspect of the editorial process.
  • Experience in creating and overseeing successful production flow and systems would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in editing and structuring longer-form content, including interviews, scripted and narrative pieces.
  • Familiarity with Code Switch’s voices and tone.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively in challenging situations.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise on issues and stories on race and identity.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ broadcast or audio experience, in roles of increasing responsibility.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience editing the work of others.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience managing, mentoring staff and managing projects. 
  • Proven experience working on deadline, while maintaining high journalistic. 
  • Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Deep understanding of NPR programming across platforms.
  • Experience collaborating on large scale projects with other teams and divisions.

JOB TYPE

This is a temporary (6-month) full time position.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $69.18 plus benefits. The hourly rate displayed reflects the minimum and maximum rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
