About the Role

The Athletic is hiring a Staff Editor to assist with new coverage of collectibles and memorabilia. We’re looking for an energetic and passionate journalist with a strong background in editing and the ability to write occasionally. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment while bringing creativity and strong organizational skills.

This role will be remote for candidates located in the United States or Canada only.


Responsibilities
  • Assist with big-picture, conceptual vision for the coverage, including long-term direction on editorial and multimedia offerings. 
  • Generate and plan story ideas while ensuring a distinctive, compelling, and authentic voice to content on all platforms.
  • Assist in directing and editing freelancers.
  • Write occasionally, including breaking news, explainers and short features.
  • Maintain an understanding of audience and subscription metrics with proficiency in SEO.
  • Coordinate assignments, editorial resources and process.
  • Develop strong relationships with colleagues across the newsroom to encourage participation in bolstering the content offering.
  • Collaborate with design on best execution for stories with a clear visual element.
  • Assist in maintaining an updated and accurate forward-looking editorial calendar.
  • Edit and publish stories via WordPress.


  • Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience in digital sports journalism.
  • Ability to generate story ideas that result in strong audience engagement and solid subscription growth.
  • Experience writing news and short feature stories.
  • Experience working with writers on strengthening ideas; strong sense of how to take a single idea and develop it into a broader package.
  • Understanding of the following editing tasks: copy editing, story structure, recognizing problematic sentences, style guidelines.
  • Ability to add context to stories, edit in the writer's voice, ensure fairness, provide story structure.
  • High-end knowledge of the collectibles and sports memorabilia space a plus.
  • This role will be remote for candidates located in the United States or Canada only.
  • The annual base salary range for this role is $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
