SRED Writer (+ bonus if Technical Writer too)

Hiya! We’re Radical I/O, a people-first enterprise software development consultancy and lab that develops technology with purpose. We work with cities and purpose-driven organizations to develop meaningful, data-driven solutions that provide people with easy access to information, when and where they need it.

We also currently support our sister early-stage startup company SimpliCity, a SaaS website and integration platform for Canadian municipalities to achieve public information and service delivery excellence. The platform recently launched with their first early adopter municipal customer, the District of North Vancouver.

THE POSITION

Are you an experienced SRED writer for software projects - if so, we could use your help ASAP! We've successfully submitted our own SRED claims over the past few years through the help of people like you. We could use your help annually to interview, research, and write our claim narratives. Our fiscal year is July 31, and our current writer is no longer available - so we've opened this position again.

We can also give you regular part-time work if you also have strong Technical Writing experience, other funding writing experience and/or general sales and marketing writing experience.

Beyond SRED, there are opportunities to research and write the following types of content if any/all of it is in your wheelhouse (over time we may split content writing over various roles):

  • public and private tax credits and grants
  • government project proposals
  • RFP responses
  • whitepapers
  • product support documentation
  • webinar and presentation content
  • LinkedIn posts
  • newsletters
  • ....and more!

If you would like to work with us for projects beyond SRED, then you will work closely with Radical's/SimpliCity's founders, and you will be responsible for the entire end-to-end process of understanding funders' and government proposal requirements, setting up documents and templates for responding in their preferred structure, researching requirements and best practices for responding, reviewing past documentation and interviewing business and technical team members and founders to gather information, writing drafts, editing and re-writing drafts based on feedback, and preparing clean-line versions for final submission by founders. You will work with founders to prioritize which items to write and complete first for submission timelines. You will keep a log of work in progress and submission deadlines through the use of Notion. Various items will be created using Google Docs; however, some documentation may also be written in Notion depending on the nature of it. Ideally and a bonus would be to help out the founders, in between writing and updates, to take time each week to source new relevant funding opportunities to assist with prioritization activities.

Ideally, you have experience writing for technology companies (startups through to mature), particularly in the B2B space. Past experience researching, interviewing, and writing (and achieving funding) for the SR&ED tax credit is highly valued. We consider it a desirable bonus if you've worked with the government, or other public sector/education/non-profit organizations before too. If you have other writing skills - for instance, in web sales and marketing, social media, etc - then feel free to highlight that as an extra bonus too.

We particularly love working with people who are purpose/value-driven, and who are accepting, open-minded, collaborative, communicative, and down-to-earth. SimpliCity is woman-led by Founder & CEO Briana Sim; therefore, inclusive and flexible hiring processes and working conditions are important to us. We hope they are important to you too!

TIMELINE, HOURS, and BUDGET

We are hiring for 1 or 2 roles, depending on your skillsets. When applying, you'll be asked within the application if you are interested in role 1 or role 2 or both roles combined.

Role 1: SRED Writer for year-end claims annually, logged and billed hourly.

Role 2: Technical and Content Writer, regular part-time hourly work.

If you're interested in role 2 that involves technical writing tasks and/or sales & marketing writing tasks, then we can keep you perpetually busy in a part-time capacity to start on a 1 year basis (either as an employee or a contractor). Over time, this role can potentially move to a permanent full-time one for the right person, or we will hire an additional writer to fill in the gaps.

You will work 15 to 20 hours per week, over 3 or 4 days within our team's usual Mon-Thurs schedule of 8am-7pm PST. If you are not working from within BC, then we would need the bulk of your daily hours to overlap within our team hours (you can choose which hours within those times work best for you, with some hours outside core hours also doable).

We are a fully remote team working within Canada (sorry, candidates physically located outside of Canada will not be considered).

This posting is going up Aug 11 and will be taken down Aug 19, as we are looking to run interviews and make an offer over the last two weeks of August, for a start date of around Sept 16, 2024.

Our budget for the role(s) is within the $35/hour to $45/hour range, depending on if you would like to be paid as an employee or a self-employed or incorporated contractor, as well as the strength of the experience you bring to the table. Please share your requirements within that range in our application questionnaire.

REQUIREMENTS

You'll do well in this role if you have:

  • Recent history of writing successful SR&ED narratives.
  • A minimum of 3+ years technical writing experience.
  • Impeccable written and verbal English communication skills with samples of content.
  • Strong technical & scientific research and comprehension abilities.
  • Experience researching, interviewing, writing, and editing reports for SR&ED, IRAP, and similar grants and tax credits.
  • Experience organizing, writing, and editing government requests for proposals/qualifications/information.
  • Strong attention to detail and project management skills in order to track and respond to funding opportunities and proposal accurately and on time.
  • The ability to quickly understand the technical aspects of our website and integration platform, focusing on headless content management, data, and API integrations.
  • The ability to take on the writing style and personality of our company and founders, and improve upon it (particularly to shorten/focus our wordy-ness!).
  • A university/college/post-secondary degree is preferred, but a combination of strong experience and education is also acceptable.
  • Bonus: Government and related industry related work experience.
  • Bonus: Other writing experience and interest in sales and marketing messaging for web, social, reports, and more.

Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster. Do not contact us with unsolicited services or offers.

We're looking for curious, driven, skilled, creative, and genuine individuals to join our growing team.

Hiya! We’re Radical I/O, a people-first enterprise software development consultancy and lab that develops technology with purpose. We work with cities and organizations to develop meaningful, data-driven solutions that provide people with easy access to information, when and where they need it.

Our custom development work with various public and private organizations means that our entire team has to be quite flexible, collaborative, and we enjoy tackling unknowns. Throughout the year, you could work on 2-4 different projects, all with different tech stacks and deliverables. If you like change and the challenge of getting to know new clients, environments, and tech, then please do consider joining us. Depending on your experience level and interests, you'll also have the opportunity to work on building and configuring cloud infrastructure and automated deployments.

While we’re essentially technology agnostic in order to work with the right tech for the right purpose, we definitely lean more towards working with JavaScript on both the front-end (React, Angular, Vue) and the back-end (NodeJS), but we also use Java, Python, Scala, and Go with systems like Kafka, Spark, and ElasticSearch. On mobile, we focus on Swift, Java and Hybrid like React Native and Flutter. Most of what we develop is in the cloud (AWS, Azure, Google/Firebase). We orchestrate deployments using Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes, and automate continuous integration with Jenkins. We’re heavily focused on API-oriented architectures and system integrations that run at scale. Data is at the core of everything we do. For our day-to-day collaborative work, we tend to rely on Atlassian products (JIRA, Bitbucket, Confluence), Google Suite, and Invision.

Radical is also on an exciting journey to create a platform for cities (SimpliCity™) that uses data to enhance decision-making, service delivery, and improve people’s lives. We’ll soon be launching Content (our headless CMS) as the first module of the platform. As part of future work on the platform, we will be exploring and implementing software that utilizes artificial intelligence, machine learning, and real-time data streams. You may have the opportunity to be involved in areas relevant to your skills and interests as they arise in our product roadmap.

We’re a small business with a small (yet mighty!) team of people who come from a diverse mix of backgrounds, experiences, locations, and perspectives. Our roles are split about 50/50 between developers and business/project/design/leadership, but we’re definitely looking to expand our development team. We’re proud that we don’t compromise our principles for profit, and that we keep all development local to Vancouver and Canada so that we can positively impact and grow our tech community.

We love to hire people who are fairly flexible and generalists in nature (but who still have, or pick up, a specialty or two), and who contribute to our environment of belonging, integrity, and caring for others. We don’t expect you to know everything, but we do hope you’re willing to learn as you go and that you enjoy tackling unknowns. Whether you're very experienced or new to the field, we look beyond cookie-cutter requirements and instead focus on your potential. We hire skilled teammates who are hungry to learn and grow, and who really care about the quality of work they produce. We want you to be proud of working on our team, and we want to feel privileged to know you.

We offer a flexible and inclusive space to work where we encourage you to be your unique self. We are actively working towards changing the gender imbalance in the tech industry, and we highly encourage teammates whose identities are under-represented in the software development field to apply. If you don’t match 100% of the job requirements, but have awesome life-skills, are passionate about what you do and eager to learn, we also want to hear from you.

Cheers,

~ Briana Sim, Founder & COO (CEO of SimpliCity)
