Software Development Engineer - Linux

CIQ OVERVIEW

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Systems Engineer, you will produce and implement functional software solutions for Rocky Linux with primary responsibilities dedicated to the Enterprise OS Builds team. You need to be familiar with various aspects of Linux system development, including packaging, troubleshooting, and configuration. You will work with the engineering team to define requirements and take the lead on operational and technical projects. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Helping to create a great team culture through communication and collaboration.

  • Participating in architecture-level discussions, planning, and implementation.

  • Researching to ensure what we are building is always the best path forward.

  • Documenting each project to share knowledge and facilitate integration for users.

  • Driving proof of concepts and minimal viable products for demonstration.

  • Focusing on quality by developing automated tests.

  • Leveraging source control (Bitbucket / Gitlab) for all development while collaborating with internal teams and the open-source community.

  • Participating in setting and meeting expectations by planning and estimating work.

  • Deploying on standard server architectures, virtual machines, and cloud infrastructure.

  • Improving products by collaborating with Engineering teams, Product teams, Sales teams, and open-source communities (as needed) on optimal and relevant solutions while sharing knowledge.

NEEDED TO SUCCEED

Successful candidates will demonstrate CIQ’s core values, improve the Engineering and company culture, and have an iterative software development mentality. You will have an understanding of Ansible playbooks and/or DoD STIG/SCAP/RADIX process. Proficiency in Bash, YAML, XML, JSON, REST APIs/OpenAPI. Familiarity with packaging, backporting, and creating Linux distros. Picking up and becoming proficient with new technologies and tools. The ability to pivot to new challenges in a fast-paced startup environment. Passion for technology and a focus on automation. Expertise in deriving solutions from high-level or incomplete requirements. Strong problem-solving and debugging skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment. A friendly, collaborative, humble, honest, and always striving to be better attitude. Flexibility to support an on-call rotation.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

At least five years of experience in a development environment. Demonstrated experience supporting Linux development and debugging and two years of experience with creating distros. Proven experience with Linux internals, Linux administration, Kernel and User Space, and SysVinit. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) tools and processes. Experience packaging source, building RPMs, deploying through package managers and ISO distributions as well as creating OCI and AMI builds. Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) – EC2, S3, CloudFormation, CLI, Lambda, SQS, DynamoDb. Involvement with the Open-Source Community is also preferred.
