Senior Project Manager

Who We Are

Teal Media is a full-service creative and design agency with a conscience. We believe purposeful design can transform organizations, inspire action, and enable progress. Our clients and nonprofit partners commit their lives to creating positive social change. We pour every ounce of our passion and skill into their success, because we, too, want the world to be a better place. We offer a variety of strategic, creative, and technical services, including brand strategy, web design and development, and creative support.

We are a woman-owned and woman-led firm with a diverse staff. At Teal Media, we value our people above all else and choose to work with partners and clients who share those beliefs.

Position Overview

In addition to responsibilities associated with being a Project Manager, a Senior Project Manager is an expert at project and client management, highly attuned to project vitals and risks.

Your Team

This role is under the Project Management team. You will report to the Senior Director.

Capacities

Capacities describe the knowledge, skills, and abilities that we ask all members of our organization to demonstrate in their respective roles. They comprise three main categories:  organizational capacities expected of all members, management capacities expected of each member in a management position, and departmental capacities expected of members in their specific positions.  In addition, successfully performing your role within your specific team requires certain departmental capacities illustrated through the following skills and competencies:

Departmental capacities:

    • Client Engagement: You communicate clearly, accurately, and in a timely fashion with clients, ensuring that clients feel heard throughout. Even when a substantive response is delayed, you keep clients up to date on when to expect more information. You maintain a relaxed environment when engaging with clients, keeping them at ease while still moving things forward.
    • Holistic Project Management: You act as a project advocate, not just a project manager, by making sure the project goes well and results in the best work we can do. You take the long view and apply a holistic approach to project management by balancing quality, budget, time, your colleagues' capacity, and client needs (for example, deciding to go over budget by 10% for the sake of client retention). You set priorities, goals, and timelines to achieve the highest quality results while maintaining both an appropriate sense of what is most important and a realistic sense of the time demand involved.
    • Organization and Time Management: You establish a systematic course of action for yourself and others to ensure that projects are completed on time and with a high degree of quality and accuracy. You create and use systems to organize and efficiently keep track of project information, document progress, and communicate back out to the team. You keep track of tasks completed and know the status of your own work and projects at all times.
    • Solutions Orientation: You anticipate potential obstacles and client needs, proactively heading off problems before they occur whenever possible. When a problem does arise, you present your analysis and recommended solutions or proposals for how to move forward in addition to identifying or describing the problem itself. You break complex situations and challenges into manageable parts. You acknowledge when you don't know something and take steps to figure it out, including seeking additional resources and asking for support.
Responsibilities

Process and Strategy (10%)

  • Work with the Associate Director of Project Management to help define the Teal Media PM methodology and approach
  • Support the development of new templates and maintenance of updated templates and processes.

Mentorship (15%)

  • Lead by example and mentor less experienced project managers by demonstrating how to manage client relationships
  • Help problem-solve and advise less experienced project managers as they work through client scenarios

Project Management  (70%)

  • Handle more complex projects, both in scope and subject matter
  • Partner with other team members to ensure we are providing the best possible solution to meet project goals

Support Business Development and Marketing (5%)

  • Support business development efforts by attending and participating in pitches for higher-profile projects
  • Evaluate current project relationships for new opportunities, bringing in an account manager to help develop new work when appropriate. Be in tune with finding the best solutions for the client, even if not part of the current scope (and then work with AM to grow the project scope)
  • Provide guidance where needed to marketing efforts as it relates to case studies and other support

At Teal, we have each other's backs. This means occasionally taking on responsibilities, tasks, and special projects that are not a core part of your job description. No one is above any task. We are all committed to helping each other to succeed as a whole. In the words of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, “We all do better when we all do better.”
