The Senior Legal Counsel, Technology & Intellectual Property (IP) will help build a best-in-class commercial program at Wealthsimple. This includes negotiating complex commercial agreements, support for vendor procurement, IP protection and licensing. We are looking for someone who is an excellent business partner and negotiator, who is pragmatic and creative, and who expects to leverage technology to enhance both the quality and efficiency of our commercial function. As a key partner to our Finance and R&D teams, you will actively identify opportunities to grow revenue, manage risk and protect and monetize our assets.
Role responsibilities:
Negotiate and draft agreements that enable the development and execution of our product roadmap and growth initiatives, including strategic partnerships, licensing and outsourcing. Provide legal advice and support on new products, in particular IP advice, including drafting policies and associated documentation.Contribute actively to innovative ideas for growth and scalability, including new partnerships, new opportunities to monetize our significant R&D assets.Partner with our procurement function on all types of vendor agreements.Implement AI and other innovative technology to increase the quality and effectiveness of our large and growing commercial program. Skills you bring:
A law degree and minimum 5-8 years’ experience in technology commercial law, gained at a major Canadian law firm or an in-house corporate legal department.Experience with drafting and negotiating complex legal agreements, in particular those common in the Canadian financial industry. Expertise in SaaS and technology licensing agreements.Familiarity with Canadian financial infrastructure and intermediaries, including regulated intermediaries, data providers, cloud infrastructure, and security providers.Rigorous analytical skills and ability to proactively issue spot and problem solve. Ability to effectively apply risk-based frameworks to ambiguous problems.Skills to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences.Project management and organizational skills that can be used to balance competing priorities.Nice to have:
