Job Description

TITLE: Organizing Advisor, Southwest or West

 

LOCATION: This position will work remotely in the Southwest or West region of the U.S. We are seeking applicants based in and able to travel easily within/to the following states: AZ, CA, CO, OR, TX or WA

 

DEPARTMENT: Campaigns

 

REPORTS TO: Senior Manager, Organizing and Influencing

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Oxfam’s campaign department mobilizes and collaborates with people taking action in their communities and organizes influential leaders to use their power for change to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice. We are seeking an energetic organizer to join a team that is building Oxfam’s supporter base and activating volunteers and leaders across the US to organize in their communities and grow the number of people taking action to address inequality.

The Organizing Advisor will develop strategies and implement tactics that mobilize new and existing supporters – including grasstops, allies and volunteers in the Southwest or West who are passionate about fighting inequality and for climate justice locally and globally. The position will also serve as a core member of one of Oxfam’s priority campaigns and will create digital and offline strategies and tools to grow support for Oxfam and advance our campaigns while supporting grasstop leaders, allies and volunteers in building and strengthening their own networks and communities.

COORDINATES WITH: will closely collaborate with Campaign Leads, Organizing Advisor, West/Southwest , and a Senior Advocacy Advisor who runs the grasstops Sisters on the Planet program. As a core member part of the Climate or Economic justice campaign team this role will collaborate with colleagues from policy, media, digital, government relations, and with staff across the US.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Work with the Senior Manager for Organizing & Influencing and Campaign Leads to grow the number and diversity of Oxfam supporters demanding policymakers take action to fight inequality and end poverty
  • Develop and oversee execution of organizing strategies to mobilize Oxfam’s grassroots and grasstops power to achieve campaign and policy wins.

 

  • Organize 1-3 major actions, events, rallies, media stunts or other tactics per year to generate attention and put pressure on decisionmakers
  • Provide organizing guidance and advice to volunteers, grassroots leaders and allies in leading their own actions and events that mobilize more supporters
  • Identify, recruit and train a limited number of volunteer leaders in key Southwest or West geographies (tbd) to represent Oxfam and recruit additional volunteers
  • Create and nurture online volunteer communities on social platforms
  • Serve as main point of contact for volunteer leaders in the Southwest or West ensuring clear and effective two-way communications, including volunteer feedback and input to campaigns
  • Ensure volunteers leaders are informed of and in compliance with Oxfam Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policies
  • Build relationships with and facilitate in person engagement with grasstops Oxfam supporters such as Sisters on the Planet Ambassadors, ally organizations and corporate & policymaker targets in the Southwest or West as needed
  • Experiment with creative, fun and inventive tactics to reach policymakers and new volunteers
  • Apply feminist principles in relationships, spaces and work with volunteers, colleagues & external individuals, and ensure the organizing work advances Oxfam’s journey to become an anti-racist organization
  • Utilize Oxfam’s digital communication and contact management systems, ensuring volunteer and organizing data is regularly and accurately captured.

  • Will stay abreast of professional standards, trends, and issues affecting this set of responsibilities, demonstrating continuous learning of the field.
  • Will work effectively and collaboratively in support of building a team-based, problem- solving work culture treating all persons with dignity and respect, and will be familiar with and committed to Oxfam America mission, values and goals.
  • Working knowledge of grassroots advocacy efforts, trends, and the legislative process
  • Will have a fundamental understanding of gender justice and diversity within key areas of responsibility and a commitment to promoting gender justice, racial equity, and diversity in our workplace and programs.
  • Within key areas of responsibility, will have a commitment and be accountable for activities contributing towards a safe an accountable workplace environment, projects & relationships for staff, partners, and the communities we serve.
  • Up to 35% overnight travel within the US primarily in the Southwest/West with some travel to Oxfam offices in Boston and/or DC; some evening/weekend work required

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of work experience, education, and training.

Experience and Core Competencies:

 

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience organizing for political or policy change on social justice or equity issues
  • Demonstrated success in managing, training and coaching organizers or volunteer communities – in both online and in person settings
  • Proficiency in digital organizing and advocacy content creation across various channels (e-mail, SMS and social) as well as building and maintaining communities using digital organizing tools and platforms
  • Commitment to applying feminist principles and anti-racist approaches in organizing work; including actively identifying and addressing injustices that we may be perpetuating.
  • Ability to represent Oxfam in a variety of settings and with diverse audiences
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, in a remote setting and set priorities among multiple tasks
  • Good judgment, initiative and ability to anticipate problems and follow through with confidence

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preference for candidates who are fluent in Spanish
