Legal Operations Specialist

Check is leading a revolution in the payroll industry. Payroll is the backbone of the US economy, and yet it has not undergone significant innovation in decades. We invented the embedded payroll space to change that (see: Check: Solving the $150 Billion Payroll Problem, Bank On It; Episode 438), both for the business owners who spend countless hours per week running payroll and for the millions of Americans who depend on their next paycheck. At Check, our mission is to empower the most innovative software platforms to create new payroll businesses, and enable those businesses to transform the way companies pay their employees.

Check’s culture is intensely caring: to each other as teammates, to our partners, and to the businesses and workers we serve. Our teams are made up of creative problem solvers and empathetic cross-functional collaborators who can simplify the complexities of payroll. We bring hustle and grit to our day-to-day, while building enduring solutions and relationships.

We’re seeking a Legal Operations Specialist to join our team and own critical aspects of Check’s Legal function.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage all incoming and active contracts, including as the primary owner of Check’s contract lifecycle management system and vendor management platform
  • Own knowledge management for the Legal team, including drafting SOPs, educating stakeholders, and maintaining the internal Legal Notion page
  • Draft basic contracts and corporate governance documents, working with internal counsel and outside counsel as needed
  • Communicate with partners, investors, banks, and regulatory agencies on legal diligence matters
  • Track legal spend and implement process improvements
  • Co-manage Legal-adjacent projects alongside our People, Finance, Partnerships, and Data Security teams
  • Assist with Legal team management including team communications and culture-building

Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates have:

  • 3-5 years of experience in legal operations or equivalent operational field (e.g., finance operations)
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to act as the ultimate source of truth for legal records and processes
  • Excitement for organizing documents, synthesizing information, and leveling up the legal and compliance day-to-day operations
  • Comfort with systems ownership and platform management; familiarity with Agiloft or equivalent contract management system
  • Ability to own and manage numerous projects at once, including managing cross-functional stakeholders
  • Comfort with time-sensitive deadlines in a fast-moving environment and willingness to work outside of normal business hours as needed
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to learn and expand skills
  • An ownership mentality and flexibility to take on a broad range of projects to serve the company’s needs
  • Willingness and ability to attend our annual 3-day company offsite in the fall

Travel and Office Policy

The Check team is distributed across the US and we have offices in New York City and San Francisco. While we welcome remote work, personal time is valuable and important. We offer ample opportunities and encourage employees to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons a couple of times a year! All employees should be willing to participate in our annual 3-day company offsite in the fall.

For our in-office and hybrid employees, our offices are open all week. We provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the team hosts regular happy hours, game nights, etc.

What we offer:

For full-time employees, Check offers company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term/long-term disability, and basic life insurance coverage, effective on their first day of work. We also provide stock options, flexible PTO and sick leave, 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all new parents, flexible return-to-work, 9 annual holidays, a 401k retirement plan, and a $100 monthly stipend for home internet and mobile phone expenses.

The actual annual salary for this role is dependent on each candidate’s experience, qualifications, and work location:

  • The expected range in San Francisco, NYC, LA, and Seattle is between $150,000 and $165,000.
  • The expected range for all other locations is between $127,500 and $140,250

We accept applications on an ongoing basis with no specified deadline.
