HR Consultant

Founded in 2017, Bright + Early is a People Operations consultancy unlike any other. Known for building unique, creative and inclusive work experiences, we specialize in partnering with values-based organizations across Canada, the USA and the globe. Our clients span the worlds of tech, creative industries, not-for-profits and other change makers. From engaging interview processes, to modern performance reviews, equitable compensation and inclusive policies, we build it all for our clients. We also act as trusted guides and coaches as they navigate the highs and lows of people management.

We also value community. We open-source our work via Early Magazine, publish a biweekly newsletter full of community resources, and donate a percentage of our revenue to the Bright + Early Better Workplaces Fund.

We're looking to add an intermediate level consultant to our diverse, friendly and engaged team. This is a full time, salaried role suitable for someone with experience as the solo HR manager of a scaling company, someone with existing HR consulting experience, or an experienced generalist from a larger team looking for more autonomy in their next role.

Here's why this job is awesome:

  • You'll work with a variety of really cool companies across different industries who are bought-in to building top notch workplaces. We vet all of our clients for alignment with our values.
  • The experience of seeing inside (and helping) a wide variety of companies will accelerate your learning and impact as an HR pro.
  • You'll get the excitement of building from scratch, with the backing support of a team and best practices to draw from.
  • The team environment and learning opportunities are A+

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has experience building People systems from scratch. Ideally, you have experience building and advising on many aspects of the employee journey, including the following modules*:

    • Recruitment process design
    • Onboarding programs
    • Career paths and performance management system design
    • Compensation models
    • Benefit and perk design
    • Employee engagement programs
    • Policy writing and employment law

    • Coaching and supporting leaders
    • Change management
    • Organizational design
    • Employee relations, support and conflict management
    • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) advisory

*Note that we do not require or expect you to have experience in all of these areas! If you have half or more, you're good to apply. Right now, we are especially seeking candidates with experience and interest in compensation models, policy and compliance work, and organizational structures and models.

  • Is at the experience level where they are comfortable presenting to executives, and is comfortable working with and advising Bright + Early clients directly. That said, you're not alone. We provide an extensive database of best practices and templates that are regularly reviewed by experts, as well as unbeatable peer and team support.

  • Is passionate about diversity, inclusion, belonging and anti-oppression perspectives in the workplace, and how they impact policy and programs.

  • Is interested in and curious about the latest People Ops tools, software, theories and techniques.

  • Is happy to build hands on. This is not an advisory only consulting role– we get right in and make things, and you will often be writing or crafting.

  • Has strong written communication skills. We want our work to reflect the voices of the organizations we collaborate with, so an ability to write quality, human-sounding copy is an asset.

  • Has high digital literacy. We are 100% digital and frequently use Notion, Slack, and a variety of HRIS systems and software. Experience with these is not required but you should be very comfortable using and picking up new software.

  • Is conscientious and thorough, empathetic, tactful in tough situations, collaborative, highly communicative and reliable.

  • Has a learning mindset. You'll often be called on to build or do things you haven't done before, and should have a 'dive in and figure it out' attitude along with a collaborative and humble approach to feedback.

  • Savviness with Excel/Sheets is an asset.

  • Experience in the tech, creative or nonprofit worlds is an asset.

What we offer:

  • Health benefits, including paramedical, drug and dental coverage, an EAP, career coaching services, and 16 annual hours of fully paid-for therapy through Inkblot (8 personal counselling hours, 8 family or couples counselling hours), plus an HSA for anything not covered by these.
  • Profit sharing program.
  • 4 day work weeks every other week– every other Friday is a paid day off without hours needing to be made up.
  • A parent-friendly and flexible workplace with flexible hours and a 75% top up plan for 4 months of parental leave.
  • 4 weeks of vacation and 3 spiritual leave days annually for religious or cultural events that are not on the government calendar (or just reconnecting with yourself), 10 paid sick days.
  • Learning and development as a team. We regularly bring in experts for enlightening talks and two-way conversations on what's new and cutting edge in our space, and how we can apply it. We've hosted service designers, leading academics, Indigenous leaders and many more. There is also a $2000 per person annual budget for learning.

Location: We are Ontario based but remote first. There is no mandate on in-person work, but we occasionally gather to collaborate or celebrate, including an annual retreat.

Reporting: This role reports to Trisha Neogi.

Compensation: $97,500 - $120,000 + benefits and profit sharing.

Projected start date: August 2024 or earlier.

Process:

Step 1: A call with the role's manager, Trisha Neogi, to cover the basics of the role and our company, and discuss a high level overview of your past experiences, goals, and interest in this role.

Step 2: A video call with two of our team members to dive deeper into your experiences, goals, and style as an HR practitioner.

Step 3: A take-home activity that enables us to get to know your style and experience as an HR practitioner. It's designed to be fun and should not take more than 2 hours to complete. We'll compensate candidates at this stage a rate $100 for completing the activity.

Step 4: Our final applicants will have a call with our founder, Nora Jenkins Townson.

While not all applicants will be selected to go through the interview process, we do aim to respond to all applications when possible.
