Head of People

This role could be based in the UK or the US, ideally in London or New York.

Anthemis deploys human, intellectual and financial capital, diversely and inclusively, to affect change and build resiliency in the financial system. Our deep understanding of markets and models, passion for emerging technology and spirit of collaboration inspire everything we do. By creating fertile ground for entrepreneurs, institutions, researchers, academics, and visionaries to come together, we believe we can solve the financial services world’s most pressing challenges faster, better and for the benefit of all.

We’re seeking a truly exceptional and progressive Head of People for this unique opportunity. You will be a fundamental part of Anthemis’ leadership team and have an aligned value system that respects and prioritizes DE&I at its core. In this role you will:

  1. Design & deliver the end to end people experience for our 40 person, global team, to encourage and enable the Anthemis mission, vision and values
  2. Continually enhance and improve our people & talent programs, practices and ways of working to be market leading, challenge the status quo and help shape the future of work
  3. Coach and guide leaders to provide exceptional, inclusive leadership and growth opportunities for their teams
  4. Run Anthemis people operations (across the full lifecycle from recruitment & onboarding to payroll & benefits to exit management) as well as our physical and remote workplace experience
  5. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work with Anthemis’ 150+ portfolio company Founders, CEOs and People Leads to help scale their organisational cultures.

Through this varied role, you are uniquely placed to have a massive impact on the success of so many incredible businesses and the people within them. On any given day, you could be coaching founders or leaders, facilitating a workshop, making sure everyone gets paid, helping shape and manage our remote and workspace environments, developing and executing plans to evolve our culture and build new capabilities or a whole host of other People & Operations things!

This role is not a ‘set the strategy and delegate delivery’ role. You will be comfortable switching between partnering on the most strategic projects and conversations one minute to diving in and rolling up your sleeves the next. We’re a small team that all chip in to get things done. This role will also lead and develop our two team support and office managers (one in London, one in New York).

More specifically, as Head of People for Anthemis, you will:

  • Design and deliver the end to end People experience for the Anthemis team, operating as a one-stop-shop for the full gamut of People activity: from payroll through to the People Plan. There’s plenty in place already, but there’s always room for improvement as we and the rest of the world continue to learn and grow. Some of the things you’ll be empowered to focus on in the short term will be evolving our current practices around our development & growth framework, our compensation and incentive frameworks and our remote first / hybrid ways of working.
  • Optimise people practices to ensure we continue to attract and develop world-class talent and continue to stretch our programs and practices to be market leading
  • Engage with analytics, market research and test-to-learn experimentation to support data-led decisions across the business for all things People and workspace (virtual and physical)
  • Develop Anthemis’ talent value proposition into one of the most enviable in the world, ensuring we continue to be seen as market leaders, challenge the status quo and re-shape the way we think about work, especially in our core pillar of DE&I
  • Drive a high performance culture, which is values and purpose-led, through performance frameworks that encourage alignment of everyone’s contributions to our collective goals and strategy
  • Develop and guide leadership capability and ensure team development is supported and enabled whilst looking forward and developing the future capabilities Anthemis will need to achieve its longer-term growth plans and strategy
  • Manage our workspace experience globally, both physical and remote - everything from the tools and platforms we use to enable work and collaboration to our physical real estate footprint globally. As part of delivering the Anthemis people and workspace experience, you’ll oversee facilities and office management, inclusive of tenancy agreements & landlord / building management relationship management and facilities vendor management

In addition to the focus on the Anthemis team, you’ll also engage with Portfolio company Founders/CEOs/People Leads in high potential startups and scale-ups (ad-hoc):

  • Provide advice as called upon, across scalable and sustainable people infrastructure and practices which enable high performing teams and help businesses grow sustainably
  • Support them, ad-hoc, to evolve their unique cultures, people experience and value proposition so their clout in the talent market is disproportionate to their size
  • Coach founders and People Leads, ad-hoc, at various growth inflection points
  • Curate and manage the panel of People & Talent vendors that support our portfolio companies as an extension of the Anthemis team

Requirements

In order to excel in this role, you will ideally have the following experience:

  • Senior and operational HR/People experience in or with small, global businesses (ideally with specific experience in both the UK and US) and therefore know the likely opportunities and challenges
  • Have designed and implemented progressive, market leading and defining people programs and practices
  • People and business consulting experience in dynamic organisations is great too if complemented with with the practical application (this is not an advisory role)
  • Juggling competing priorities and running operations across a globally distributed team from ways of working, tools and tech, to real estate and business & people performance planning & monitoring
  • Have experience working with or within scaling fast-growth businesses in an influential People role (founders we work with want to draw directly on that experience of scaling a team through People & Culture)
  • Have worked directly with leadership teams and across whole businesses, you feel comfortable talking to a diverse range of stakeholders with different interests, perspectives and personalities

In addition, you will be:

  • Zoomable (not the video calls) - be as comfortable with looking / planning forward 2-3 years as you are delivering on what’s needed today and tomorrow; you are comfortable zooming out to take account of the whole picture, and zooming in to do the doing with meticulous attention to detail
  • Self-aware and reflective - you are known for your EQ and resilience
  • Articulate, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Autonomous - with sound judgement and problem-solving ability. Comfortable making tough decisions and taking risks where necessary
  • Entrepreneurial - at ease with fluid structures and concepts, excited by the unknown and willing to roll up your sleeves to be part of it
  • Insatiably curious - eager to learn, with an open mindset and learning disposition
  • Comfortable with ambiguity - at ease with the non-linear and adept at learning through experimentation
  • Known for championing making it happen, acting as an owner, and bringing your best self to work
  • Capable of context-switching and are excited by variety - each week, you’ll be working with different internal projects [and different businesses at different stages of growth and with different cultures]
  • A hands-on strategist with a passion for people, human and organisational development, with an execution bias to deliver results
