About the Global Director of Human Resources
The Global Director of Human Resources is responsible for leading the strategic direction of recruitment, HR and talent management of 350.org globally. Championing our mission and the culture and values of 350.org, this role will oversee a small global team of HR professionals, and work with senior leaders, management and staff in creating and implementing a strategy that attracts, retains and develops talents and seeks to develop an employee-oriented, high performance culture that emphasizes justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) and embodies our values.
This role is responsible for leading and managing the entire employee lifecycle, and the development of new people-related systems, policies, processes and metrics that support the achievement of 350’s Theory of Change, organizational goals and strategic objectives.
The Global Director of Human Resources is responsible for establishing best practices for the organization, administering compensation and benefits, performance management, HR compliance and advising managers and staff on talent acquisition and management around the world.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Foster a collaborative work environment and oversee all employee relations.
- Develop long-term and short-term human resources strategies and programs that are aligned with the overall organizational goals and strategic objectives of 350.org.
- Provide leadership and management to the global HR Team, building clear objectives, fostering a strong and motivated team and investing and developing the development of individual team members.
- Work collaboratively and closely with key stakeholders including: the organizational development team, senior leadership, general counsel and line managers to build a culture of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion which embodies our values.
- In collaboration with line managers and members of the HR Team, supervise the resolution of employee relations across the organization.
- Work with legal counsel to ensure compliance with international labor laws, conducting HR audits as necessary; and provide expert and professional advice to resolve complex employee relations issues in a balanced, fair and objective manner.
- Provide, where necessary, appropriate counseling, investigative, intervention and mediation techniques to resolve complex employee disputes and lead on developing and training managers with these tools.
- In collaboration with legal counsel and other senior leadership, oversee 350.org’s labor relations, working positively and collaboratively with the Workers Council and trade unions to provide leadership and direction during collective bargaining and consultations.
- Oversee the development of tools and guidelines to support and implement policies and procedures, domestic and international employment agreements, development of HR information systems, specific country office employee manuals and benefits.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of HR metrics and people data to inform key decisions.
- Lead the development and execution of employee engagement and retention strategies, plans, and initiatives including the design and implementation of a training, mentoring and professional development and succession plans, ensuring that these strategies and processes are centered on JEDI.
- Lead and oversee the development and fair administration of total rewards strategy and structure.
- Ensure managers and staff receive regular training on key policies and are provided with coaching and support, where appropriate.
- Develop and monitor annual team budget, goals, objectives and work plan.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Organisational Development and the Workers Council to ensure HR policies and procedures build an effective working culture in line with our justice, equity, diversity and inclusion goals.
Competencies:
- Technical HR: Strong familiarity with international and local employment laws and regulations, including US state and federal employment laws. Strong background in supporting talent acquisition, talent management and development, employee relations, coaching, conflict resolution, compensation and benefits administration.
- Ethical Practice: Ability to make sound judgment, exercise discretion and credibility, and act as an agent who promotes fairness, integrity and accountability across the organization. Must believe and embrace 350.org’s vision, mission, and progressive values.
- Relationship Management: Ability to build, nurture, promote and influence healthy work relationships and to work as an effective member of the team and the organization. Ability to create a safe space for management and staff to discuss work issues and to manage conflict, while supporting the organization. Ability to interact with staff from diverse cultures and backgrounds with sensitivity and respect.
- Self-Management: Ability to set professional boundaries. Resilient and able to manage self and keep composure in times of stress. Able to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Change management: Ability to plan and implement changes to working practices across the organisation, taking into consideration stakeholder views and being open to embracing new ideas that lead to optimal results.
- Communication: Effectively craft and deliver concise and informative communications. Ability to draft, develop and deliver HR policies and training. Ability to listen to and address the concerns of others, and to transfer and translate information from one level or team of the organization to another.
- Justice and Equity: Strong commitment to workplace justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. Must embrace the principles and apply them to day-to-day work.
- Achieving results: Setting strategic direction and ensuring work plans and budgets consider multiple priorities, dependencies and competing deadlines. Organized, detail oriented and accurate.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and relevant work experience.
- At least seven (7) years of experience in Human Resources and Organizational Development.
- At least three (3) years of experience in management, with demonstrable ability to build and lead a team of HR professionals.
- At least three (3) years of experience working on HR issues in an international organization.
- Previous union experience and strong understanding of the US NLRA.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of regulations, accepted professional standards, policies, procedures and legislation that impact Global HR including equality legislation, employee rights, health & safety, data privacy.
- Understand and embrace progressive values.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Previous experience in an international not-for-profit
- Globally recognised HR qualification (eg CIPD, PHR, SHRM-CP or CCP Certification)
- Proficiency in Google Drive, Slack and Zoom.
- Fluency in at least one additional language
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others
