Data Scientist

About Pow.bio

Founded by a UC Berkeley Ph.D. graduate and a SynBio veteran, Pow.bio is revolutionizing the $500B biomanufacturing market by building a self-driving fermenter platform that enables cost-effective scale-up solutions across a wide array of strains, organisms, and products.

About the Position

We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Data Scientist to become part of our expanding team. As a member of the computing team, you will report to our CTO and collaborate closely with our fermentation R&D team to develop a machine learning-driven, continuous optimization platform. Your role will be supporting and developing our model-predictive automatic fermentation software platform. Additionally, you will contribute to our internal research and development initiatives, focusing on the design, construction, and resolution of challenges within continuous manufacturing platforms across various processes and product categories.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the fermentation R&D team to understand scientific and business requirements and objectives.
  • Exploring various algorithms to find the best approach for the continuous system.
  • Train models and optimization algorithms using simulated and collected data. Tune hyperparameters to optimize performance
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis and modeling to identify patterns and correlations.
  • Design and implement predictive models for automatic fermenters using machine learning techniques.
  • Evaluate model performance using appropriate metrics and validation technique
  • Work with the Science and Operations teams to deploy trained models into production environments, integrating them into existing systems, and ensuring scalability and reliability. Assist in troubleshooting and resolving challenges within continuous manufacturing platforms.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in machine learning, data science, and continuous manufacturing technologies.
  • Present and communicate findings, insights, and recommendations to stakeholders clearly and concisely.
  • Occasionally visit Pow HQ for opportunities for training, skill, and team development sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Obtained a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in any quantitative science discipline. The salary will be commensurate with experience.
  • Proficiency in any programming language and interest in learning additional languages.
  • Experience with modeling or simulating dynamic physical systems.

  • Passionate about biomanufacturing. Possess a curious mindset and a proactive approach to personal growth.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with F# or other functional programming language
  • Experience developing software systems for production environments
  • Proven experience in machine learning, data science, biomanufacturing, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with bioreactor systems and processes, including chemostat, fed-batch fermentation, or other similar dynamic systems.
  • Strong understanding of statistical methods, deep learning, and building models with ordinary differential equations.
  • Experience with real-time monitoring and model-predictive control systems is preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
