Data Reporter

Stacker is hiring a full-time data reporter. We’re looking for journalists with 2+ years of experience working in a newsroom. Our data reporters have a mix of skills: reporting, writing, programming, database, and statistics. Strong candidates do not need to be good at all of those. Instead, we’re looking for journalists with multiple tools in their journalistic toolbelt – dogged reporters who are also comfortable messing around in Excel or Google Sheets, for example, or data wizzes who know when it’s time to pick up the phone and find a source.

Subject-matter expertise is a huge plus, and we’re open to a range of beats. More importantly, though, we’re looking for someone who’s interested in getting valuable data-driven journalism into the hands of publishing partners (who, in turn, get it into the hands of their readers). Someone who understands the opportunities and challenges smaller, local newsrooms face and is excited about powering their reporting. Sometimes this will involve impressive data analysis and visualization, but more often it’s simply a matter of getting really practical information out in a useable form. (Our gas prices widgets are a good example of this.) .

Last, but defintely not least, Stacker is a highly collaborative newsroom, and the ideal candidate will be a kind and generous co-worker who is eager to team up on stories and projects. We’re looking for someone who’s invested in helping to build an inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

You’ll be part of our newsroom, helping to brainstorm and pitch stories, analyzing data, and constructing journalistically sound story approaches.

As a data reporter, you’ll be focused on:

  • Pitching and producing stories that resonate with our publishing network and Studio clients and make an impact.
  • Using programming languages such as Python or R to create original analyses and models to tell stories.
  • Sourcing new datasets to power compelling stories off the news.
  • Teaming up with other members of our newsroom on more ambitious features and projects.
  • Expanding our storytelling into new formats and research angles (i.e. automated local series, data viz, investigative features).

About the Company

Stacker is empowering newsrooms by building the world’s most accessible, widely distributed newswire. Stacker focuses on storytelling through data, using research, reporting and analysis to contextualize the news, creating and distributing engaging, empirically based journalism to thousands of newsrooms across the country, including Nexstar, MSN, Hearst, Tribune Publishing, and Lee Enterprises.

Today, Stacker stories are read by millions of users each month, both on Stacker.com and our growing syndication network of world-class news outlets. Our Studio offers a turn-key content marketing solution for brands and marketers, natively producing and distributing unique, newsworthy stories on their behalf.

A completely bootstrapped company, we're looking for experienced team members to help scale Stacker's newsroom operations and commercial products.

Stacker is dedicated to creating a diverse and inclusive newsroom that reflects the communities we serve. We encourage women, people of color, veterans, people with disabilities, and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

Stacker is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, genetic information, pregnancy, or any other protected characteristic as outlined by federal, state, or local laws.

Requirements

We do not expect candidates to check every one of these requirements. If you think you are a good fit, and you can perform the responsibilities laid out above, you should apply. If you satisfy some of these requirements, are familiar with others, and have a willingness to learn, you will make a strong candidate for the position.

  • 2+ years of experience conducting original data analysis in a newsroom or equivalent environment.
  • A track record of innovation and bias to action: You step into roles and improve processes or implement new ideas effectively.
  • A demonstrated record of collaborating with kindness and generosity on large, multi-stakeholder projects and completing complex work under deadline pressure.
  • Advanced data analysis skills, including tools such as advanced Excel/Google Sheets (vlookup, index/match, nested IF statements, Pivot tables), Python/pandas/Jupyter notebook, R, or MySQL.
  • Fluency in Flourish, Datawrapper, or comparable softwares to turn data into interactive graphics.

Nice-to-have’s

We don’t expect candidates to check all the boxes above, let alone all the boxes below. But having some of these skills and experiences would make a candidate more appealing and/or more likely to succeed.

  • A deep understanding of traditional statistics (particularly causal inference).
  • Experience doing traditional reporting, such as interviewing expert sources.
  • Experience with JavaScript, D3, or comparable languages/libraries for creating custom visualizations.

Employee well-being is top of mind for the Stacker team. We offer the following benefits to all team members:

  • Competitive Base
