About SH:24

First off, thank you for considering a role with us!

SH:24 is a pioneering online sexual and reproductive health service, delivered in partnership with the NHS. We make it easy for people to self-manage their sexual and reproductive health online by providing free STI test kits, contraception & treatment, information and advice - 24 hours a day. We’ve won a host of awards and industry recognition for what we do, and we’re happy to say that our reach and services offered are expanding every day.

We are not-for-profit and passionate about delivering discreet, convenient and clinically safe sexual health services. Our vision is to make it easier and faster for people to access sexual and reproductive health services, no matter where they live; we’ve been doing it since 2013. We’re also proud of our community and the people who work for us; those who have helped us shape a company that puts our users at the heart of everything we do by designing services that are easy to use, easy to access and easy to understand by all that need them.

How we work

The data research team’s purpose is to improve public health outcomes by creating data products and services that help people make informed decisions. We use agile methodologies to deliver our work. We prioritise work that delivers the most value in an iterative and incremental way.

We have daily stand-ups, weekly refinement sessions and bi-weekly retrospectives to organise and improve our work. We use shortcut.com as a kanban/project management tool. We also love pairing and you can expect to work closely with your team!

We have adopted Databricks as our core data platform. However, we maintain reporting tooling in Tableau including static PDF performance reports. You will be playing a key role in supporting our migration from Tableau to Databricks.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an experienced data engineer to join our data research team. You will be working alongside our Data Analysts and Senior Data Engineer. You will play a key role in boosting the capabilities of the team. The role involves close collaboration with our Product and Engineering team.

  • You have experience in data modelling and data architecture. Ideally, with experience in designing data models for analytics teams.
  • You have strong experience in using SQL to build, manage and query databases.
  • You have experience using Cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure) to design, build, test and maintain data pipelines for a range of users.
  • You have a solid working knowledge of a range of data storage technologies SQL/NoSQL databases, data warehousing to data lakes.
  • You have experience working with distributed data tools like Databricks, Apache Spark or Hadoop, or want to learn.
  • You love to mentor and guide other data team members and up-skill those who are more junior than yourself.
  • You can explain technical ideas and concepts to mixed audiences of both technical and non-technical colleagues

If this sounds like something you’d love to be doing then please send us an application and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. If you don’t feel like you match what we’re looking for exactly then please don’t let that put you off applying.

What You’ll Get From Us
  • Competitive salary between £50,000 to £70,000
  • Genuine support to grow and progress within the company using our Growth Framework and regular progression and pay reviews
  • 25 days annual holiday plus bank holidays and the days between Christmas and New Year off (around 36 days a year 🌴)

Office/Remote Working

We’re primarily a remote company however we do have an office near Waterloo that a lot of people work from. You can work from there as often as you like but also from anywhere else within the UK. We often hold company events or team workshops where it's nice to meet in person so if you can make it in for those that’s a bonus but not essential at all.

Interview process

We have a three step interview process:

  1. A 30 minute interview with a member of the data research team and someone from the wider company. It's an opportunity for you to learn more about us and what we do, and for us to learn more about you and what you are looking for.
  2. A take-home technical design test. We want to understand a bit more about you approach and break down problems.
  3. A pairing interview. This will be a conversation with two members of the SH:24 team. You'll have an opportunity to talk through your technical design, we'll ask you some questions about your experience and you'll have a chance to ask us more questions.
