The Opportunity:

The Legal department is looking for the next addition to our legal team -- a great lawyer who will support the US business — and the global business - on both pre-litigation commercial disputes and formal litigation matters.

As Litigation Counsel, you’ll join a global team and report directly to the Chief Legal Officer. You will partner directly with executives, senior business leaders to set commercial litigation strategy for all commercial disputes including with supply chain partners and vendors, customers and various commercial third parties.

This role is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for technology, excellent problem-solving skills, creative negotiation skills and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment that requires cross-functional collaboration across the legal and business teams.

You Will:

Lead Litigation Strategy for Commercial Disputes:

  • Be the lead legal advisor to the business, Chief Legal Officer and Chief Financial Officer on all commercial disputes, both pre-litigation matters and formal litigation
  • Represent the Company in a variety of venues, including mediation, arbitration, private settlements, regulatory bodies and US courts
  • Lead engagements with various outside counsel as necessary
  • Work with litigation paralegal to manage and track all matters, from inception and preservation notices through interim reporting of matters and accruals, through to resolution of matters
You Should Have:
  • 3+ years of experience in commercial litigation, resolving pre-litigation commercial disputes of all types
  • Knowledge and experience in commercial disputes within the supply chain a very strong plus — transportation, trucking, warehousing, freight forwarding, ocean carrier, motor carrier, air carriers
  • Knowledge of general conventions and liability standards (COGSA, Warsaw, Montreal, etc) applicable to logistics and cargo claims and disputes a very strong plus
  • A strong preference for applicants with litigation experience or experience handling pre-litigation claims and disputes in the maritime or trucking industry.
  • Command of federal and state laws and regulations governing trucking, property brokerage, warehousing, 3PL services, carrier liens, and financial transactions in the transportation industry.
  • A strong appreciation of how transportation services are actually performed that empowers you to provide clear, actionable legal advice about operations and strategic plans.
  • A working knowledge of marine, cargo, logistics and liability insurance is a strong plus.
  • A strong work ethic and a desire to meaningfully engage with multiple teams on a regular basis.
  • Common sense, great judgment, and a good sense of humor.
  • Ability to assess risk and provide sound, commercially-minded legal advice to Executives and senior business leaders
  • Ability to work on your own and prioritize multiple, often competing deliverables while managing expectations and meeting deadlines
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate effectively and gain trust and confidence with personnel at many different levels
  • Ability to work as a team member of the legal department in a scalable, autonomous and accountable manner, demonstrating flexibility across matter types and time zones
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with both internal clients & colleagues as well as external parties (counsel, customers, supply chain vendors) while addressing complex issues in an accurate, clear, and thorough manner.
