Chief People Officer

We’re looking for a Chief People Officer (CPO) to join our leadership team.

When you come work with us, here’s what you’ll find:
  • Work that is meaningful. We are a fast-paced, deadline-driven consulting firm that only works with nonprofit clients who are essential to advancing the cause of justice, alleviating suffering, and solving the greatest challenges we face.
  • Commitment to Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion (AEI). We envision an anti-oppressive workplace that ensures an inclusive employee experience, promotes equitable outcomes for staff, and supports clients to center accessibility and anti-racism in their programs.
  • Colleagues you can count on. Kind, dedicated, passionate people who work collaboratively to get things done and help you do your best.
  • An organization that embraces change. We strive to improve and adapt and always seek new ways that we can contribute to a just, inclusive, and sustainable world. We are also continually working on making M+R a better place for our staff.

So that’s us. Now about the work:
  • M+R’s Chief People Officer is a strategic leader who will lead a best-in-class People Area that is thoughtful in all aspects of the employee life cycle at M+R and supports the successful achievement of M+R’s vision, mission, and goals.
  • Day-to-day, the CPO will oversee the business unit that focuses on hiring, developing, and retaining competent, dedicated staff. They will help cultivate high-functioning teams at M+R so that we work collaboratively, efficiently, and effectively, and foster a strong organizational culture that reflects and furthers M+R’s values.
  • The Chief People Officer reports directly to the CEO and is part of our Shared Services Area -- composed of five specializations: finance, operations, people, marketing, and AEI. We ensure M+R is positioned to deliver outstanding services to clients such as Planned Parenthood, Feeding America, International Rescue Committee, NRDC, and many more.

Here’s what you’ll be doing in this role:
  • Lead, develop, and drive organization-wide strategies in the areas of performance management, recruiting and hiring, learning and development, employee and labor relations, benefits and compensation administration, policies and procedures, and compliance.
  • Advise the CEO and provide solutions-oriented recommendations on all matters related to staff development.
  • Serve as a member of M+R’s Leadership Council and participate on multiple committees to provide input on the firm’s plans and programs as a strategic partner from the perspective of the impact on people.
  • Drive the development and successful implementation of M+R’s overall employee relations strategy for a staff of 150+, mostly remote employees throughout the country.
  • Lead M+R's approach to change management to ensure projects are planned, communicated, and implemented effectively to achieve company goals.
  • Partner with senior leadership and the Union Executive Committee to identify, implement, and oversee the execution of M+R’s labor relations approach, including collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration procedures, risk mitigation, and compliance.
  • Partner with M+R’s Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion Area to create alignment between policies and procedures and the organization’s AEI priorities and strategies.
  • Develop strategy for and oversee the administration of the firm’s benefits and compensation programs: lead the ongoing evaluation of benefit plans and provide input and strategy on complex compensation structures.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and employment law; review and ensure policies and practices are implemented or updated to maintain compliance.
  • Oversee performance management strategies to ensure strong processes of maintaining or improving employee job performance, coaching, and counseling, as well as providing continuous feedback to ensure the processes are effective and efficient.
  • Shape recruitment and hiring strategies to help meet the organization’s AEI priorities.
  • Oversee learning and development strategies to ensure that staff grow during their career at M+R and are able to meet the needs of our clients.
  • Manage a team of nine -- being proactive about their professional development and well-being.

Skills and experiences required for this role:
  • 10+ years of senior-level experience (Director+) leading multiple major HR and People functions as a hands-on senior leader in an organization, with demonstrated experience creating, implementing, and improving organization-wide people strategies, systems, and processes.
  • 2+ years of executive level (CHRO, CPO, or equivalent) experience with a proven ability to drive and execute change, lead and implement strategic human capital management plans, and data-driven talent practices as a trusted advisor and partner to senior leadership.
  • 3+ years of experience working in a unionized environment, including leading relations with staff unions and bargaining a labor contract.
  • Drive, energy, and passion for the “human” in Human Resources and People.
  • In-depth knowledge of current and potential future relevant federal, state, and city labor and employment laws.
  • Demonstrated experience advising supervisors to follow best practices when managing sensitive work situations.
  • Experience in organizational design and development.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively in a way that articulates your ideas and conveys your expertise, whether on the phone, in-person, or in writing.
  • Clear and strategic thinker and writer, with the capacity to quickly identify root causes of problems and to develop creative and strategic solutions.
  • Experience supporting, directly supervising, and coaching staff.

We love hearing from anyone who strives to make the world a better place! Not sure if you meet all of the qualifications? There is no harm in applying! We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and strongly encourage you to apply!

Skills and experiences we expect of all M+R employees:
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to gain trust and give respect to others through honesty, integrity, kindness, empathy, and authenticity.
  • Acute attention to detail and demonstrated ability to prioritize time to meet deadlines for multiple projects.
  • Drive to seek what can be improved and offer ways to fix any potential roadblocks.
  • Comfort admitting what you don’t know and recognizing that feedback is part of the learning process.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively in a way that articulates your ideas and conveys your expertise, whether on the phone, in-person, or in writing.
  • Able to work within equitable and inclusive decision making models in moving decisions and initiatives forward.

Skills and experiences that are preferred, but not required:
  • A Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification, SHRM-CP, or equivalent.
  • Experience using Google Apps, Paycom, Workday Adaptive Planning, and/or Asana.
  • Experience working in various industries and types of organizations with 200+ employees.

  • This is an exempt status position. The compensation for this position is $225,000 annual base pay plus incentives. Compensation questions and details will be discussed more in depth in the initial interview.

  • 401(k) plan with employer match;
  • Quarterly discretionary profit-sharing contributions;
  • Flexible work schedules and the option to work remotely anywhere within the United States and its territories with broadband internet;
  • Annual $1,000 professional development stipend;
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for medical, dependent care, and transit.

Our Hiring Process:

We aim to be transparent and efficient in our hiring process. Each question you will be asked throughout our hiring process ties directly back to one of the skills and experiences listed above. In each interview, you will be asked to provide examples of these skills and experiences or how you would draw on your experience to handle a scenario commonly found at M+R.

Depending on logistics and scheduling, our hiring process generally takes about 4-5 weeks from phone interview to a job offer. We let candidates know after each step in the process, once we’ve made a decision, whether they are moving forward to the next stage or not, so candidates know the status of their application. Finalists will be invited to an in-person interview experience with select members of the Board. If you need accommodations for this application process or any of the hiring process steps listed above, please email accommodations@mrss.com or call 202-681-8743.

M+R is an equal opportunity employer and all applicants will be considered. As a firm we are committed to being an anti-racist, equitable, and inclusive organization where all staff feel welcomed, valued, and empowered, resulting in meaningful, rewarding, and enriching experiences throughout their careers here. We work to center our AEI values in all aspects of our work, so our culture, clientele, policies, and practices are reflective and affirming of people -- inclusive of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, immigration status, citizenship status, and so much more. We strongly encourage folks from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.
