First, an important note: Data shows that men on average apply for a role if they meet 3/10 requirements while women often only do so if it’s 10/10. We work hard to be clear and specific about what our roles include and demand and encourage you to apply if you see a strong (but not necessarily perfect) fit between you and the opportunity.
FutureFit AI is looking for an AI Engineer to join our Data Team to help build and scale data systems and develop machine learning models, especially large language models (LLMs). You will partner closely with our data scientists, as well as members across other functions such as engineering and product to understand backend system design, technical requirements, and performance and scalability criteria. This role requires unrelenting attention to detail, rigor in validating results and distilling complexity across a wide problem space. The right fit will be critical to accelerating product development for our generative AI strategy and ensuring we use the latest tools and approaches in a fast-moving industry.
The ideal candidate is someone who has strong data science fundamentals, thrives in a cross-functional environment, enjoys working across data engineering and infrastructure, and can apply their skills in real production settings. This role has a core focus on serving as a critical bridge between our engineering and data teams focused on our LLM-powered products and features. You should be comfortable across NLP/NLU model design, development, and evaluation to data pipelines and AI system design, as well as diagnosing both model performance and system failures.
Specific: first 100 days
Partner with engineering in building scalable data pipelines to service LLM agent APIs
Assist in developing and deploying APIs and models aligned to generative AI feature needs and our product roadmap
Assist in developing, improving, and scaling LLM agents and underlying architecture
Advise and work alongside engineering on data architecture and database design suited to natural language and enterprise reporting requirements
Collaborate with other data scientists to improve an LLM-focused evaluation and testing methodology
Provide input into data, training, fine-tuning, and other methods to ensure our models improve over time and remain defensible
Ongoing
Help lead technical components of our AI projects end-to-end, from requirements, scoping, and design, to implementation, in a highly collaborative and cross-functional environment
Exercise good taste in systems design and consult other engineering members for input on the technical design of ML systems and APIs
Design, develop, and deploy ML models aligned to our product and data roadmaps
Proactively explore innovative approaches for continued improvement, including a proclivity to stay up-to-date on research papers, methods, and open-source tools (ArXiv, Hugging Face, etc.)
Work alongside data engineering to optimize and scale our pipelines and data warehouse
Contribute mentorship to other data scientists and cross-functional team knowledge-sharing
Ensure data privacy and compliance with relevant regulations
Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback
Must Haves
3-5 years of experience in machine learning, data science/engineering, or a related engineering field
A technical background (education or professional experience with CS, Statistics, Engineering)
Strong programming skills in Python and experience in writing production-grade code
Familiar with SQL programming and SQL / NoSQL databases (such as MongoDB, ElasticSearch)
Experience in data engineering tasks such as scoping, building, optimizing, and scaling data pipelines and APIs
Proficiency in cloud tech stacks and specifically AWS services/tools such as Redshift, Airflow, and Sagemaker
Basic to advanced experience in NLP/NLU: NER models like spaCy; building text classifiers and algorithms from SVM to neural networks like BERT; information retrieval and document understanding
Experience with LLM deployment, fine-tuning, training, prompt engineering, etc.
Exposure to AI/autonomous LLM agent architectures and methods including feedback mechanisms, data preparation, and memory solutions
Nice to Haves
Experience with multi-modal LLMs and data, specifically storing and processing voice data
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as code
Recent experience with LLM frameworks like Langchain and LlamaIndex
Advanced experience with AI/autonomous agents projects, including fine-tuning LLMs, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), and task automation
Your alma mater isn’t our focus. Your grit, hunger, and drive are. If you’re one who learns continuously, tackles challenges head-on, and knows your strengths and gaps intimately, you’re our person.

This role offers the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere in the United States or Canada while also providing access to our collaborative in-person office hubs in New York and Toronto. It will require occasional remote travel for in-person meetups, typically 3-4 times per year, likely in Vancouver, Toronto, and/or NYC.
The compensation package for this role is variable based on applied experience and other factors identified by the hiring committee. The package will be a combination of three components: base salary, equity, and performance-based compensation, and the expected range of each of the components is interdependent on the other two components. Therefore, while multiple combinations of the components are possible, the base salary range for the role is expected to be at least $160,000-$200,000.
